“His progress has been incredible despite some doctors saying he would never walk again.” The words alone were powerful—but the clip April reshared on X made them unforgettable. It showed a young track and field athlete, trembling but determined, pushing himself to stand—legs wobbling, hands clenched, jaw set in defiance. For April, a fierce DEI advocate and a prominent voice for justice, this wasn’t just about sports. It was about resilience. Visibility. The will to rise—when the world says you can’t. But one question quickly echoed across social media: What exactly happened to this athlete? What was the incident so harrowing it left doctors doubting he’d ever walk again—and why did his fight resonate so deeply that April chose to spotlight it?
Tre Lawson was on the fast track to greatness. Recruited by top-tier programs like Auburn and Clemson, the Georgia native had the kind of speed that turned heads on the track and opened doors to the nation’s most elite schools. But in 2017, everything changed. One fateful day, while returning home from a track meet with friends, tragedy struck. Their car veered off the road and plunged 30 feet into a ravine. Tre Lawson suffered a near-complete spinal cord injury, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. He was rushed through multiple hospitals in search of the best possible care but remained unconscious for much of that time. Doctors told him he’d never walk again. But Tre had something stronger than doubt.
He had the unshakable will that defines the American spirit. Two years later, at just 19 and now a student at Fort Valley State University, Tre defied every expectation. He rose from his wheelchair and walked—step by determined step—around the very track that once felt a world away. It was his first lap on foot since that tragic day. For many, that would have been a miracle. But Tre wasn’t finished yet!

As reported by Olympics.com, Tre made a powerful return to the track on July 4th, 2020—a date that couldn’t have been more fitting. On that symbolic day of freedom and perseverance, Tre left his wheelchair behind. Armed only with a walker, he stepped back onto the track, determined as ever. But even then, the track and field prodigy didn’t pause to celebrate the milestone for too long. Tre had already set his next goal. “2019 was get rid of the wheelchair,” he declared. “So 2020 is get rid of the walker!!” In his eyes, this wasn’t just a personal victory—it was the beginning of a transformation. He had started to dream again, to reclaim a life that had been abruptly turned upside down.

Today, he recalls only fragments—brief flashes—from those harrowing days. Yet, against all odds, Tre is now forging a path toward the Great American Dream. And in doing so, he’s not just reclaiming his life—he’s becoming a beacon of hope for countless others.

The track and field star has become an inspiration
Tre Lawson’s story isn’t just about survival—it’s about giving back, staying true to your passions, and rising higher than anyone ever expected. While still in college, Tre launched Rolling Hope, a charity, which, through T-shirt sales, supports the Shepherd Center—an Atlanta-based facility that played a key role in Tre’s recovery—and advances spinal cord injury research. For Tre, it wasn’t just about his comeback. It was about lifting others, the way he had once been lifted. But through it all, Tre never let go of the things he loved before 2017. One of those passions?
Video games! Last year, just ahead of July 4th, the track and field star took to Instagram to send out a call: gamers, gear up. He was hosting a gaming competition on August 2nd and 3rd. Despite facing physical challenges, he promised to be there in person. Because that’s who Tre is—relentless, passionate, and rooted in community.
