Despite winning the Astana Indoor Meet, Kishane Thompson‘s return has been underwhelming at best. The explosive return that the athlete and his fans were expecting was far to be seen. And while he did have another accolade to his, we are yet to see his best this season. His outdoor season has seen him soaring to all-new heights. But his 60m at the Kazakh capital has raised some questions about what he has to offer.

Thompson had earlier made a roaring start to his 2025 season, clocking a blistering 6.56. Even Canada’s double Olympic gold medalist, Andre De Grasse, couldn’t match Thompson’s pace. And finished further down the field in sixth place. However, his recent victory didn’t spark the same kind of excitement many had hoped for. While he crossed the line first, it was clear there was more left in the tank.

Thompson plowed through the completion last year, topping it with his silver at Paris 2024  With a blazing 100-meter time and a solid place among Jamaica’s top sprinters, he showed he could hold his own against the world’s best.

With an amazing run at the JAAA National Championship, he took home the gold in the 100m final, securing his spot, right up there with Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell as the fourth-fastest ever. But as the indoor season kicked off, there were speculations about if he could carry that momentum. Was his indoor performance really on the same level as the incredible heights he reached outdoors?

Kishane Thompson made a strong debut at the Astana Indoor Meet, winning the 60m race with a time of 6.58 seconds. A user shared on X, “Kishane Thompson 🇯🇲 wins 60m heat in his indoor debut in Astana, clocking a time of 6.58s!” While taking the top spot was a solid start, the time left a few people raising their eyebrows.

In comparison, his time in Astana felt a bit underwhelming, making some wonder if the long trip to Kazakhstan might have affected his performance. The victory was undeniably sweet, but considering the hype after his impressive outdoor season and his recent showing in Jamaica, it felt like there was more potential in him. Could he have pushed just a little bit harder?

The race was exciting, but instead of popping champagne, everyone was left scratching their heads. Kishane Thompson’s win has marked the start of what could be an exciting season ahead.

A narrow loss that cemented Thompson’s legacy

In one of the most exciting moments of the 2024 Paris Olympics, Kishane Thompson and Noah Lyles faced off in the 100m final. Thompson, who had led for most of the race, found himself narrowly beaten by Lyles. The American pulled ahead by a fraction of a second with a perfectly timed dip at the finish line. Despite the defeat by a fraction of a second, Thompson proved his place among the world’s best. And displayed grit and determination worthy of his silver.

After the race, Thompson took a moment to reflect on the loss, feeling a mix of disappointment and pride. “I’m a bit disappointed, but I’m happy at the same time,” he shared“I made a mistake. I’m just going to keep on working and doing as best as I can. I didn’t trust myself enough and my speed to bring me to the line in the right position I needed to be.”

Thompson’s words give us a real glimpse into his mindset after such a narrow loss. One can see how resilient he is by how he just keeps pushing on. And him admitting he wasn’t confident in his speed? That just shows he’s thinking hard about every part of his game.
