Honored to style the fabulous 2x Olympian, @junellebromfield! It was such a pleasure working with her and bringing her look to life,” shared Noah Lyles‘ girlfriend’s stylist, Takaylaa Slays, in an Instagram post. She shared a video of Junelle Bromfield’s fresh new hairstyle, and let’s just say, the internet loved it. The curls were popping, the confidence was glowing, and the comments said it all. For Bromfield? But for Bromfield, the moment brought back a memory that didn’t sit quite right. Why did this fun, feel-good post suddenly take her back to the Paris Olympics? She explains it herself…

In a June 30, 2025, Instagram story, the Jamaican athlete reshared a post from the Paris Olympics. It showed her silhouette in the starting blocks in Paris, with the caption, “🎶Melanin too dark to throw her shades 🤎🎶.

For context, this was a picture from her iconic 400m semifinal moment, where she proudly embraced her natural look. Just days before that race, Bromfield had announced her decision to ditch the makeup, wig, and filters. Her exact words? “On to the next round 🥳 Embracing my natural beauty, NO MAKEUP, NO WIG, NO FILTERS. 100% melanin.” And as promised, on race day, she stepped onto the track with her hair styled in a high Afro puff, proudly showing off her natural tight-coil texture.

Today, looking back, she added a surprising update in her IG story: “This was my hair shrinked. Now I don’t even have half of this blown out. 😭😭😭 I will be in wigs and braids until my hair grow back 😐” All Bromfield fans are aware that she is keen on experimenting with her hairstyles. And this is now a part of her image and personality!

For her special day? Well, right after Paris, when she got engaged to Noah Lyles back in October 2024, the Jamaican athlete donned a braided hairstyle once again. Soon after, she switched things up with a straightened look—and even went blonde for a while. There’s also an Instagram post on her account where she’s seen sporting a bob cut, showing off yet another transformation.

While Junelle focused on spreading a message of self-love and strength, there was more to the story behind her Olympic run.

Junelle’s iconic moment and the story behind it…

I could go off ranting but I’m just here to tell all the girls/women on my profile that you’re beautiful no matter your shade, shape or size and for the the little black girls don’t wait on anybody to tell you that your beautiful to believe it 👸🏿❤️,” This was part of the message shared by Noah Lyles’ girlfriend after her Paris Olympics campaign. Context? Junelle had finished last in her 400m semifinals, clocking a time of 51.93 seconds. This was her way of finding a silver lining in the troll storm that followed the loss.

On the other side of the aisle, Noah Lyles pitched in to address the drama surrounding Junelle’s performances. He told the media that he knew about the drama in the Jamaican camps. In a podcast, he said, “Junelle being Jamaican and having trained in MVP, I have been getting the drama from the Jamaican camp at least five years now. There is a lot of times I make references about Jamaicans, but I am not trying to go back and forth, like I know information that other people don’t.

That comment didn’t land well. It sparked intense backlash against Junelle, with some accusing her of disloyalty. She was labeled a traitor, called a “sell-out” for dating an American sprinter, and even received death threats from Jamaican social media users. Noah stepped up to defend her publicly—and so did many of his fans. But the damage was done. A disappointing finish on the track had now turned into a storm of online hate.
