A 22.15s personal best on Sunday, and Melissa Jefferson was now 2 for 2! Her 100m masterclass had already put her way up on the GST board on Saturday. So even with Gabby Thomas’ late resurgence in the 200m, nothing could deter Jefferson from pulling out that red “Slam Champion” flag on the Ansin Sports Complex tracks. But in that moment of euphoria, the now 2x Grand Slam Champion could not have fathomed that another surprise awaited her. This one sent her on an emotional rollercoaster, hitting her with a thousand feelings all at once. Any guesses on that?

Melissa Jefferson’s winning streak may have been broken. She was undefeated in her first 3 Grand Slam Track races. But came third to Gabby on Sunday. However, she had one point above the runner-up, which helped her seal the deal easily. But while she was still catching her breath and celebrating, a little someone walked onto the track. Jefferson was touched. It was a gesture that left her teary-eyed.

May 3, Grand Slam Track uploaded an Instagram video showing a man decked up in a military uniform entering the Miami track to surprise Melissa. This was none other than her cousin from Korea who came all the way to surprise her on her show day. He tiptoed secretly with Jefferson’s husband, but the minute she saw him, the athlete broke down. She was so visibly happy and surprised that her brother lifted her off the ground while they hugged for a bit.

“You’re sneaky! You’re so sneaky,” Melissa Jefferson then laughed it off as she couldn’t believe this surprise that was planned for her. Next, minute, she also got her brother to hold one edge of the Slam Champion flag while she held the other, and the two posed. She had now captured that moment, with both the material and emotional wins standing tall in one frame.

Of course, this win is special. Not just because her brother flew down from Korea, but because Melissa Jefferson is now the first ever Double Slam Champion. And the only one in the women’s categories to do so. No wonder she took to her X account shortly after and wrote, “2x Slam Champion 🤭‼️ Get comfortable with being Uncomfortable 😤😤😤 One Day, One Practice, One Meet at a Time ✨” Of course, Kenny Bednarek followed later, as he wore the same double champ crown in Miami, but the feeling of being the first is unbelievable. Plus, Jefferson had her family around, which made it even more special. And here’s a bit of how she is feeling.
