“No levell for the 4×100 smh joke thing.” This is how many Jamaican track and field fans reacted when they saw the 4x100m relay team that was announced for the 2025 World Championships. Kishane Thompson, Shericka Jackson, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, and Oblique Seville made the final cut. However, Bryan Levell was listed in the 200m. But now, things are way different from what fans thought, and this track and field analyst cleared it all.

“I don’t have like confirmation of that, but I’m 100% sure that Bryan Levell is in the relay pool and can compete on the relay, whether or not he’s on this um relay pool list or not, said Anderson Emerole in his latest YouTube video. And the reason why he said so was simple: He knows the rules. He cited 24.10 from the competition rules PDF made public by World Athletics.

The rule says, “Each member of a relay team may run one leg only. Any four athletes from among those entered for the competition, whether for that or any other event, may be used in the composition of the relay team for any round. However, once a relay team has started in a competition, up to a total of four additional athletes may be used as substitutes in the composition of the team. If a team does not follow this Rule, it shall be disqualified.” Meaning?

“It’s literally saying whether you’re entering, you know, an athlete who’s in the relay pool. So, as an example, Kadrien Goldson is entered in the relay pool. So, they can be, he can be used in any round or alternatively or any other event,” the track & field analyst explained. He made it clear that anyone listed in the relay pool is officially entered in the championship. That means they are eligible to run in the relay if chosen. Alternatively, if they were also entered in other events, they can compete in those too.

Emerole concluded, “..Or if they’re entered in any other event at these championships, so that means Bryan Levell is also allowed, you know, as per the rules to compete on the relay. So he doesn’t have to be entered into the relay pool. As long as he’s competing in an event at the World Championships, which he already is in the 200 in Tokyo, that means he can also run on the relay.” This might surely calm down fans who were not happy with Levell missing out.

But there might be a question in the hearts of many: Why is Bryan Levell important in the 4x100m relay?

The importance of Bryan Levell in the 4x100m relay for Jamaican track and field

To start with, the Jamaican has been a promising talent in the 4x100m relays from time to time. At the 2021 World U-20 Championships in Nairobi, Levell helped Jamaica claim silver in the men’s 4×100m with a time of 38.61s, running the second leg in 9.20s. He repeated that success at the 2022 World U-20 Championships in Cali, once again earning silver as Jamaica clocked 39.35s.

At the 2024 World Relays, Levell contributed to Jamaica’s Olympic qualification with a heat time of 38.50s, where he covered his leg in 10.66s. Most recently, at the 2025 World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, he anchored Jamaica to silver in the inaugural mixed 4×100m relay, clocking a team time of 40.44s and finishing his anchor leg in a swift 9.19s. Moreover, he is also the second fastest Jamaican of this season.

He clocked a personal best of 9.82s at the Raiffeisen Austrian Open in Eisenstadt, Austria, in July. This performance placed him only behind compatriot Kishane Thompson, who leads the year with a 9.75s record at the JAAA Championships.

And so, all that says why Levell is someone fans are rooting for. Now, knowing the rules, do you think he will be there at relays?
