Let’s discuss three of the biggest talking points from last Friday’s bill, especially what’s next for the fighters who left the card with the most memorable triumphs of the night.

#1 Christian Lee Is Truly ONE’s Best Superstar

Christian “The Warrior” Lee became the youngest two-division MMA World Champion with a thumping finish of Kiamrian “Brazen” Abbasov in the night’s main event. But, really, did anyone expect anything less but another steady performance from the Evolve and United MMA fighter? It was Lee’s 17th win, 16th finish, and 12th KO/TKO on the global stage.

The 24-year-old and Abbasov battled in a two-sided contest, with both athletes coming close to finishing one another before Lee’s eventual match-winning barrage of strikes at 4:20 of the fourth stanza.

Though Lee was dropped early on, he rose back to outstrike the divisional kingpin in attack and outplayed him on the canvas to gain the ONE Welterweight World Title.

The future is certainly bright for Lee, who can move down to lightweight to defend his gold or maintain at welterweight to start another dominant run in a separate division in ONE.

#2 Is Stephen Loman Destined For Bantamweight Gold?

Stephen “The Sniper” Loman left no doubt that he should be a future ONE Bantamweight World Title challenger with a strong all-around display versus former divisional king Bibiano “The Flash” Fernandes.

The Team Lakay stablemate stalked the Brazilian veteran with his striking throughout the tie. Later, he showcased a little bit of grappling trickery to put Fernandes in dark waters.

It was the Filipino warrior’s 11th straight career win and third promotional victory.

With John “Hands of Stone” Lineker and Fabricio “Wonder Boy” Andrade entering for a ONE Bantamweight World Title rematch at ONE on Prime Video 7 on February 10, Loman will certainly have his radar on the winner of that all-Brazilian matchup.

He has showcased his evolution with more game time inside the Circle, and fans can expect more added dimensions of his arsenal in his quest for the bantamweight crown.

#3 We Need To See Danielle Kelly versus Angela Lee In A Submission Grappling Battle

American BJJ star Danielle Kelly barely broke a sweat as she decimated multiple-time sambo World Champion Mariaa Molchanova on the lead card of ONE on Prime Video 4.

The BJJ black belt pulled her rival into a vaunted close guard and began working on the Russian’s back for a choke. She hung like a backpack, tightening the squeeze. But Molchanova, to her credit, hung on.

But seconds later, Kelly slammed her foe to the ground and squeezed on the rear-naked choke to gain her first win in ONE and a US$50,000 performance bonus.

During her victory speech, Kelly insisted that she wants to test the ONE Atomweight World Champion in a submission-only bout. Both stars have been on a collision course over the past couple of months, and what better way than for ONE to seal a deal for these two talented grapplers to lock horns next year?

The coveted scrap between Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson in 2002 was when I realized the passion for combat sports within my family. My interest in combat sports began watching scripted pro wrestling shows. It was my father who directed me towards combat sports and it wasn’t until the late 2010s that I discovered the world of MMA and the UFC. Like many of you, I too, tuned in for the infamous Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor bout live on October 6, 2018. Being an ardent fan of the UFC (and Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier), I was always looking to have conversations about the same with others. But to my disappointment, I hardly found any followers of the sports to interact with. So I took it upon myself to do my part in popularizing the thrill and the agony behind the purest form of unarmed combat. At EssentiallySports, I try to bring the readers closer to the athletes and focus my coverage on exploring the human side of these martial artists. I’m a musician during my time free from reporting MMA. I operate as the lead vocalist of a rock band that aims to make their mark among the audiences with their original alternative-hard rock songs.
