Amy Pirnie gives her opinion on Yu Yau Pui with new gloves in mind

Pirnie has long been considered a top talent in the sport, starting Muay Thai at the age of 12 and rising through the amateur ranks. Upon turning professional, she would later win an ISKA British 117-Pound Title, a WBC Muay Thai International Title, clinch the ISKA Flyweight World Title, and become the inaugural Lion Fight Super Flyweight Champion. She took all her titles by knocking out her opponents, and she is hoping to do the same in her next outing.

In an interview with ONE, the 31-year-old shared her intentions for her promotional debut, balancing optimism and practicality as she faces the ultra-aggressive Yu.

“A nice early stoppage in spectacular fashion would be awesome – to do that and come in with a big knockout to start my career in ONE. But realistically, I don’t see that happening,” she said.

“I think she’s tough, she is aggressive, she has a good engine, and it is only three rounds. So I reckon that I will win the fight, but it will most likely go to a points decision. But anything can happen with these [smaller 4-ounce] gloves.”

Yu has been undefeated so far in her run in ONE, winning all five of her appearances in the ONE Friday Fights series before making a successful U.S. primetime debut at ONE Fight Night 20 this past March.

Where does Pirnie stand in the race to the top?

Despite her decorated career achievements, Pirnie has a good sense of not underestimating her opponent especially as their fight will be contested using smaller gloves.

Thus far, the Inferno Muay Thai representative’s compatriots have been showing a lot of promise in ONE. Bantamweight Muay Thai contender Nico “King of the North” Carillo is currently the top contender in his division, while Stephen “El Matador” Irvine is fresh off a huge first-round victory over Focus PK Wor Apinya at ONE Friday Fights earlier this month.

Pirnie will hope to keep the momentum going for the Scots by scoring a statement win against Yu, whether it takes all three rounds or not.
