Former ONE flyweight Muay Thai world champion, Jonathan Haggerty, believes he’s 1-1 in his two-match series with division’s king Rodtang Jitmuangnon. ‘The General’ met MMA legend Chael Sonnen, who relayed how Haggerty felt about his battles with ‘The Iron Man’.

The former UFC and Bellator fighter, Sonnen, has a massive following among North American fans. It is because he was one of the more notorious stars in the MMA scene while he was competing actively.

The former MMA world challenger has a great storytelling skill, that has built him a loyal fanbase of over a million on YouTube. Talking about ONE Championship, chiefly the former Muay Thai champion, Sonnen revealed, “I meet a guy named Jonathan Haggerty. Of all the people that I met… he made the biggest impression on me.”

‘The Bad Guy’ came to know that Haggerty competed twice against Demetrious Johnson‘s ONE X opponent, Rodtang Jitmuangnon.

Thus, the former multi-division MMA title challenger, Chael Sonnen, added, “Rodtang is as good of a striker as you would come across. Jonathan had fought him not once, but twice. Now they went 1 – 1. Jonathan tells me this – I’m 1-1. They happen to be playing the fight of Jonathan vs. Rodtang. They’re playing and he’s telling me, ”yeah this is the one where I beat him’.”

After watching the fight, ‘The American Gangster was shocked. He said, “They raised Rodtang’s hand. Jonathan said, ‘yeah, they gave him the decision, but I won. As a matter of the fact, we rematched, So, the official scorebook is 0-2 Rodtang. But we are truly 1-1’. And he said that it’s even accepted amongst the community.

The Thai fighter found a third-round finish in the rematch. However, as the Oregan-native relayed, The General still has it 1-1. Thus, he would eye a rematch to settle the scores.

Sonnen found the situation similar to how a two-match kickboxing series between phenomenal strikers Israel Adesanya and Alex Pereira played out. In that series also, Pereira won both fights – first by close decision and the second by knocking out ‘The Last Stylebender‘. However, according to the Kiwi kickboxer, he won the first bout, and it was a debatable decision.

Chael Sonnen amped fans for ONE Championship

The 45-year-old competed for various MMA organizations before retiring from the sport. Apart from being an MMA analyst, he is also a promoter for Submission Underground grappling promotion. Besides, he is a lifelong member of the wrestling community. Thus, he understands the sport from the inside and outside.

Praising ONE’s format of displaying all facets of martial arts, Sonnen said, “ONE Championship… Now if you’re a real fight fan, you got to be following ONE. The reason I say that, what do you like in [a] fight? [Do] you like the MMA? Okay, great. They do it over there.”

“But do you like the striking – it’s that it, just the striking? Okay, great, because they do it over there. What about the grappling? You like the Gordan Ryans and Garry Tonons and Buchechas of the world. Okay, great. They do that over there.”

Sonnen has previously described an incident where he and Daniel Cormier were dominated for 44 minutes by ONE Championship heavyweight in a sparring session.
