Demetrious Johnson Details the One Aspect That Has Helped Him the Most in His MMA Career

Demetrious Johnson had a definitive second round that resulted in his win at ONE Championship’s 10-year anniversary show as he defeated the Flyweight Muay Thai World Champion in a thrilling bout. ‘Mighty Mouse’ used his wrestling superiority to take down the striker and finish the bout.
However, in order to do so, he had to survive the vicious strikes of Rodtang Jitmuangnon in the first round.

It’s not a surprise to see ‘Mighty Mouse‘ remain calm under pressure. But how does he have built such a strong mentality? Johnson answered in a Q/A session on Instagram stories.
“My Wrestling Career,” Johnson said when asked what contributed the most to his sound mentality.
Even though Johnson has a complete arsenal, his wrestling appears as his best and easiest shot at winning a fight. Also, wrestlers are often humbled by the grinding nature of the sport.
The legendary career of Demetrious Johnson started at age 13 when he got his wrestling shoes on. The concept of one-on-one competition inspired ‘Mighty Mouse’ to take his career forward in the sport. Johnson was not sure about team sports.

Watching Rashad Evans on TV motivated Johnson to train MMA, and he found a great head coach in Matt Hume at AMC Pankration. Coming from a wrestling background, he was able to find early success in the sport.
However, Johnson was always relatively undersized. But when the Flyweight division was introduced, he became a long-reigning champion. Johnson has the record for 11 UFC Flyweight Title defenses.

Can Demetrious Johnson effectively use his wrestling against Adriano Moraes?

Adriano Moraes has some of the slickest submission skills in ONE Championship. The Flyweight World Champion can pull off a submission from his back and has a good top game as well. Thus, Johnson, who loves to take the fight to the ground, could find himself in trouble against the World Champion.
That said, in their first meeting, Moraes shocked the world when he tagged Johnson with a well-timed uppercut and followed it with a knee to beat the GOAT MMA fighter.

Since the fight was quick, a grappling affair between these two Flyweight fighters was not seen. However, in a potential rematch, perhaps Johnson gets the opportunity to use his wrestling to take down the World Champion, who would look to submit ‘DJ’ just like he submitted Yuya Wakamatsu.
