Amy Pirnie analyzes Yu Yau Pui’s aggressive style ahead of their fight

Pirnie is a three-time UK Muay Thai Fighter of the Year who has proven herself to be one of the best female strikers on the planet. The 31-year-old knows how to do her homework ahead of a fight, and she took time out to break down her upcoming opponent in a recent interview with ONE.

“Yu Yau Pui is super aggressive. She just constantly walks forward. She’s on the front foot all the time, and she’s got a very, very high work rate. She’s obviously very fit and constantly throws hands all the time. I would say those are the main plus points for her,” Pirnie said.

Yu has been on an impressive roll since making her debut at ONE Friday Fights 3 in February 2023. She collected five straight wins in the weekly martial arts showcase, earning her a six-figure contract to compete at ONE’s marquee events.

Pirnie’s counter-style expected to exploit Yu’s aggressive approach

The KF 1 athlete showed why she deserved that opportunity right away at ONE Fight Night 20 this past March. She took on former World Title challenger Lara Fernandez that night and won by unanimous decision after three hard-fought rounds.

Yu’s ultra-aggressive style has helped her succeed in ONE up to now, but Pirnie believes that approach will play into her own style when they meet on August 2. “I feel like my fighting style will be a big factor. I predominantly like to counter and draw people in, letting them make their mistakes and use that to my advantage for more effective shots to land,” she said.

She further added, “I think it will play into my hands because she’ll fall onto stuff quite a lot. Her footwork as she’s coming forward is very fast, so she’s traveling forward in a straight line at a pretty fast pace, which is going to give me more power on my shots for her to walk onto.”
