ONE Championship mainstay Garry Tonon is looking to continue his climb back up to World Title contention in his next match, but he’ll need to get past a dangerous fighter with the same intentions to do so. “The Lion Killer” is set to battle undefeated Russian submission specialist Shamil Gasanov in a featherweight mixed martial arts brawl at ONE Fight Night 12 on Prime Video, scheduled for July 14, inside Bangkok, Thailand’s Lumpinee Boxing Stadium.

Tonon won multiple World Titles in grappling before transitioning to MMA in March 2018. The American star went on a dominant run once there, winning his first six outings in the all-encompassing sport to rise through the stacked featherweight division.

His jaw-dropping streak was emphatically ended when he challenged Thanh Le for the ONE Featherweight World Championship in March 2022, but he bounced back in his next MMA bout, scoring an impressive win over Johnny Nunez in January.

“The Lion Killer” will be looking to start a new streak when he meets Gasanov in his upcoming bout, but he’ll certainly have his work cut out for him.

The Russian dynamo announced his arrival in ONE by taking out former top-ranked featherweight Kim Jae Woong via first-round submission in his debut last October. He was quick to make his intention to challenge for the division’s top prize clear following their bout at ONE on Prime Video 3 – and invited everyone to try and stop him.

The featherweight division will be on notice when these two stars take to the ring on July 14. And with the heated rematch between reigning king Tang Kai and former titleholder Le hanging in the balance, this showdown could well decide who’ll challenge for the divisional strap next.
