After cementing his position at the top of the ONE Championship lightweight division’s rankings with his last performance, former World Champion Ok Rae Yoon is looking to reclaim his spot as king.

The South Korean fighter made his way back into the winner’s column when he scored a unanimous decision win over Lowen Tynanes at ONE Fight Night 10 in May, and he’s now hoping his top-ranked position will allow him to compete for lightweight gold.

Ok Rae Yoon would target the Interim Lightweight title until the return of Christian Lee

“I was always number one, and I am still number one,” Ok told ONE Championship. “So I definitely should jump on to the next title fight. Christian Lee said he would return next year, and if there is an interim title bout before that, I think it’s right for me to do it, and it doesn’t matter who the next is.”

Current titleholder Christian Lee took a step back from competition this year to mourn the tragic loss of his sister, Victoria, in December. But he has recently given his blessing for ONE to introduce an interim belt in the stacked division. Though, Ok would like a chance to score some redemption against the man who snatched the World Title from him last year, he ultimately wants to welcome “The Warrior” back into the fold once he is fully ready to return to action.

The Team Mad representative shocked the world when he bested Lee by unanimous decision to win the ONE Lightweight World Title at ONE: Revolution in September 2021.

Ok Rae Yoon suggested a trilogy bout to decide a clear victor of this rivalry

The judges’ call was met with angry protests from some, not least came from Lee himself. But the Singaporean-American left no one in doubt when they met for the rematch in August 2022. Ok fell to a second-round knockout that evening, but he believes a rubber match is needed to truly settle the score.

“When Christian Lee returns, I think we have to compete immediately. It doesn’t matter anytime, and I’ll bring the title back. Since our record is currently tied at 1-1, it’s time for a final fight to determine the winner once and for all,” he said.

The coveted scrap between Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson in 2002 was when I realized the passion for combat sports within my family. My interest in combat sports began watching scripted pro wrestling shows. It was my father who directed me towards combat sports and it wasn’t until the late 2010s that I discovered the world of MMA and the UFC. Like many of you, I too, tuned in for the infamous Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor bout live on October 6, 2018. Being an ardent fan of the UFC (and Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier), I was always looking to have conversations about the same with others. But to my disappointment, I hardly found any followers of the sports to interact with. So I took it upon myself to do my part in popularizing the thrill and the agony behind the purest form of unarmed combat. At EssentiallySports, I try to bring the readers closer to the athletes and focus my coverage on exploring the human side of these martial artists. I’m a musician during my time free from reporting MMA. I operate as the lead vocalist of a rock band that aims to make their mark among the audiences with their original alternative-hard rock songs.
