Anna “Supergirl” Jaroonsak got back in the winner’s column in style this past weekend, and she now has ONE Championship gold in her sights. The teenage striking phenom took out former ONE Interim Atomweight Muay Thai World Title challenger Lara Fernandez in their catchweight kickboxing matchup on Friday, August 4, at ONE Fight Night 13, which served as a perfect rebound from her previous promotional outing.

“Supergirl” dropped a tight split-decision loss to Stamp Fairtex at ONE Fight Night 6 in January, though she received ample praise for her performance and a US$50,000 bonus along with it.

Anna Supergirl Jaroonsak wants to drop down a division post her ONE Fight Night 13 victory

Moral victories weren’t enough for the 19-year-old, however, and she sought to notch another win onto her record last weekend. Normally competing at strawweight, the Thai star was originally set to drop to atomweight for a contest with Cristina Morales, but the Spaniard wasn’t medically cleared to compete.

Despite a late change in opponent, “Supergirl” had no problems showcasing her striking prowess on her way to claiming a hard-earned unanimous decision victory. “I was excited for this fight because I knew I had to win,” the Jaroonsak Muay Thai representative said in her post-fight interview. “I am trying to go to a lower weight division right now. I felt more comfortable in the fight.”

The coveted scrap between Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson in 2002 was when I realized the passion for combat sports within my family. My interest in combat sports began watching scripted pro wrestling shows. It was my father who directed me towards combat sports and it wasn’t until the late 2010s that I discovered the world of MMA and the UFC. Like many of you, I too, tuned in for the infamous Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor bout live on October 6, 2018. Being an ardent fan of the UFC (and Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier), I was always looking to have conversations about the same with others. But to my disappointment, I hardly found any followers of the sports to interact with. So I took it upon myself to do my part in popularizing the thrill and the agony behind the purest form of unarmed combat. At EssentiallySports, I try to bring the readers closer to the athletes and focus my coverage on exploring the human side of these martial artists. I’m a musician during my time free from reporting MMA. I operate as the lead vocalist of a rock band that aims to make their mark among the audiences with their original alternative-hard rock songs.
