Aung La N Sang would welcome every fight on his way to the ONE Middleweight title

Aung La N Sang lost the ONE Middleweight World Title back in 2020 at the hands of reigning titleholder Reinier de Ridder. Ever since then, he’s been happy to take on any and all challengers to prove he deserves another crack at his Dutch rival.

The 37-year-old described his mentality over the past few years, “Everybody that comes through the door, I want to welcome them, I want to put on a statement, and I want to get everybody out of there until it’s time for me to get my title shot back.”

Perhaps surprisingly, Aung La N Sang is proud to call himself a gatekeeper. Rather than clamoring for a World Title shot every chance he gets, the former ONE Middleweight and Light Heavyweight World Champion says he’s prepared to clean out the division, no matter how long it takes.

Aung La N Sang wanted to be in the winning books to achieve another title shot

He said, “I want to keep the gate before I storm back into my castle. I want to beat everybody. I want to beat everybody, and I want to get my title back. Being a gatekeeper, people think you’re washed up. People think you should hang it up. I want to show that it’s not.”

Of course, “The Burmese Python’s” focus remains on Fan and the stiff test he’ll present on Friday night. But without looking too far ahead, Aung La N Sang is confident that as long as he keeps winning – and winning in spectacular fashion – he’ll find himself fighting for the middleweight crown before 2023 is over.

Aung La N Sang added, “It’s up to ONE Championship, but I think I’m in line for it. And I believe this year, I’m going to get my belt back.”

The coveted scrap between Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson in 2002 was when I realized the passion for combat sports within my family. My interest in combat sports began watching scripted pro wrestling shows. It was my father who directed me towards combat sports and it wasn’t until the late 2010s that I discovered the world of MMA and the UFC. Like many of you, I too, tuned in for the infamous Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor bout live on October 6, 2018. Being an ardent fan of the UFC (and Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier), I was always looking to have conversations about the same with others. But to my disappointment, I hardly found any followers of the sports to interact with. So I took it upon myself to do my part in popularizing the thrill and the agony behind the purest form of unarmed combat. At EssentiallySports, I try to bring the readers closer to the athletes and focus my coverage on exploring the human side of these martial artists. I’m a musician during my time free from reporting MMA. I operate as the lead vocalist of a rock band that aims to make their mark among the audiences with their original alternative-hard rock songs.
