Nieky Holzken Believes Special Rules Super-Fight With Yoshihiro Akiyama to Be Fought on Even Ground

Striking superstar Nieky Holzken is all set to compete in a historic matchup that will put him and his opponent into unfamiliar territory.

This Sunday, January 28, at ONE 165: Superlek vs. Takeru, “The Natural” will figure in a special rules super-fight against Japanese legend Yoshihiro Akiyama inside the Ariake Arena in Tokyo, Japan.

In the press conference held for the event this week, the Dutchman shared his excitement about competing in Japan once again. He also said he feels confident in his new weight and promises to put on a show for everyone.

“I’m glad to be back after 10 years winning my first world title here in Japan. I’m happy to fight a legend like him. It’s a short notice fight, it’s the first time for me that I don’t have to lose weight, I’m fighting on 85 kilograms,” said Holzken.

“I’m not scared of anyone of any weight. So, I really like this new body suit of what I have now and that’s the body suit of 85 kilos. I think there’s a lot of knockout power in me right now, I’m ready to rumble and I’m wishing all the fans a good show.”

The Helmond, Netherlands native has over 100 fights to his name, claiming an incredible 94 wins in a career that has spanned close to two decades.

On paper, the 40-year-old appears to have an advantage in the innovative matchup. The former boxer will get to show his skills in the first round of the match. In the second, he’ll compete in his specialty, kickboxing. Should they reach the third round, he’ll have to compete in MMA against the veteran wits of “Sexyama.”.

The final frame may be the only area where Holzken may be truly out of his depth, but he doesn’t actually see the first two rounds as an advantage for him either. After all, there are some unfamiliar elements for him throughout the contest.

“I think it’s even because I fight on 85 kilograms and he doesn’t want to fight lighter. He’s always fought with small gloves, MMA gloves, but I kickbox so I fight with big gloves. So I think it’s a little bit even,” he said.
