ONE Fight Night 16: Haggerty vs. Andrade delivered a night full of action, complete with upsets and history being made. This past weekend, ONE Championship produced its latest event, crowning two new World Champions inside the iconic Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand. In the main event, Jonathan “The General” Haggerty claimed the ONE Bantamweight Kickboxing World Championship in style, knocking out ONE Bantamweight MMA king Fabricio “Wonder Boy” Andrade in the second round of their matchup.

As expected, both came out guns blazing, but it was the English striker who would connect with precision and power throughout their match. However, “Wonder Boy” did get some offense in, landing some of his signature knees to the body of Haggerty.

Jonathan Haggerty completely outclassed Fabricio Andrade

In the second round, “The General” wobbled his adversary with a head kick, which he used as an opening to unleash a barrage of strikes on the Brazilian fighter. Just before the second minute, Andrade fell to the ground and struggled to get back up until the referee decided to call a stop to their hotly-anticipated clash. Not only did Haggerty become a two-sport World Champion, he also received a double bonus amounting to a total of US$100,000.

In the co-main event, Tye Ruotolo claimed the inaugural ONE Welterweight Submission Grappling World Championship. Albeit, at the expense of promotional debutant Magomed Abdulkadirov. While the American prodigy wasn’t able to get the finish, it wasn’t for lack of trying. Throughout their 10-minute battle, Ruotolo actively transitioned to dominant positions trying to get a submission.

However, Abdulkadirov displayed incredible resilience and defense to escape from danger. Ultimately, it was an easy decision for the judges, who awarded Ruotolo with the win. For his effort, Ruotolo was awarded with a US$50,000 bonus, his fourth in five matches in the world’s largest martial arts organization.

The coveted scrap between Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson in 2002 was when I realized the passion for combat sports within my family. My interest in combat sports began watching scripted pro wrestling shows. It was my father who directed me towards combat sports and it wasn’t until the late 2010s that I discovered the world of MMA and the UFC. Like many of you, I too, tuned in for the infamous Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor bout live on October 6, 2018. Being an ardent fan of the UFC (and Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier), I was always looking to have conversations about the same with others. But to my disappointment, I hardly found any followers of the sports to interact with. So I took it upon myself to do my part in popularizing the thrill and the agony behind the purest form of unarmed combat. At EssentiallySports, I try to bring the readers closer to the athletes and focus my coverage on exploring the human side of these martial artists. I’m a musician during my time free from reporting MMA. I operate as the lead vocalist of a rock band that aims to make their mark among the audiences with their original alternative-hard rock songs.
