Given his spectacular performance in his MMA debut last Friday, June 7, it’s no surprise that BJJ phenom Kade Ruotolo took home a $50,000 performance bonus at ONE 167: Tawanchai vs. Nattawut II on Prime Video.

The 21-year-old scored a first-round submission victory over hard-hitting Hawaiian Blake Cooper live in North American primetime from the sold-out Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand.

Kade Ruotolo expresses gratitude and shares an inspirational message after victory

That victory kicked off one of the most promising MMA careers in recent memory.

As the reigning ONE Lightweight Submission Grappling World Champion and the youngest-ever ADCC World Champion, Ruotolo is undeniably one of the greatest grapplers to ever lace up the 4-ounce MMA gloves.

After the fight, ONE Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong awarded Ruotolo a well-deserved performance bonus.

The Californian was grateful to receive the bonus and shared some wise words as he was interviewed by Mitch Chilson in the Circle:

“Thank you so much! I’m beyond psyched again. Tye’s always saying Chatri’s changing our lives single-handedly. As good as that bonus feels, there’s just one thing that comes to mind – it’s a Bob Marley quote. ‘The greatness of a man or a woman isn’t measured by the wealth they acquire, but in their ability to affect those around them positively.’ So as good as the money feels, I’m just thankful and here to spread the positivity and the good vibes.”

Ruotolo describes his relationship with his late grandfather

On a more somber note, Ruotolo dedicated his victory to his late grandfather, explaining that even though it was difficult for him to imagine his grandson competing in MMA, he’d certainly be proud of Ruotolo’s debut in the sport.

“I dedicate this performance to my Grandpa Lloyd. One of my absolute heroes growing up. We used to watch MMA fights every weekend at his house. He’s no longer with us, he’s in the sky,” he said.

He added, “He would tell me as a kid, however much money they pay you to fight MMA, I’ll pay you the same amount to not do it. He couldn’t bear the thought of us getting hit in the face. But I know for sure, he’s up there proud of me. If he seen the work I was putting in, he’d be in the front row watching as well.”
