Daniel Puertas couldn’t have wished for a better start to 2023. And a victory at ONE Fight Night 6: Superbon vs. Allazov on Prime Video this Friday, January 13, could make it even greater. The Spanish striker was originally slated to finally face off in a kickboxing battle with flyweight Muay Thai king Rodtang “The Iron Man” Jitmuangnon on the card until a shift in the schedule set him on a course for gold.

Daniel Puertas is all set to claim the best belt which he can compete for

He will now meet Thai striking superstar Superlek Kiatmoo9 at ONE’s first event of the new year, which goes down live Bangkok’s Impact Arena in Thailand on Friday night. Despite the quick turnaround, Puertas is grateful and excited to compete for the coveted crown.

“I feel very happy for this opportunity to fight for the World Title. I truly believe this is the best belt a kickboxer fighter like me can compete for right now,” the 30-year-old stated. A change in opponent at the last minute may throw some fighters off, but Puertas remains laser-focused to get his second victory from three appearances inside the Circle.

In his debut at ONE: NEXTGEN III in November 2021, the kickboxing specialist fell short on the judges’ scorecard to “The Angel Warrior” Panpayak Jitmuangnon. Determined to make an impact, however, he went back to the drawing board and upped his craft.

Daniel Puertas predicted a tough bout but saw himself winning it

This World Title matchup with Superlek is, arguably, going to be the toughest day in the office for the Malaga native, so far, but he has been wise to diffuse any unwanted mental threat in the lead-up. He is simply committed to putting on a show inside the Circle, knowing that a win will propel him to new heights.

“This would be a major step in my career as a fighter because I would be earning the most prestigious title in the world,” Puertas said. “I think it will be a very tough match, but I see myself winning this fight. We are prepared for any situation. My team and I will go out there to do our job.”

My interest in combat sports began watching scripted pro wrestling shows. It was my father who directed me towards combat sports and it wasn’t until the late 2010s that I discovered the world of MMA and the UFC. Like many of you, I too, tuned in for the infamous Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor bout live on October 6, 2018. Being an ardent fan of the UFC (and Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier), I was always looking to have conversations about the same with others. But to my disappointment, I hardly found any followers of the sports to interact with. So I took it upon myself to do my part in popularizing the thrill and the agony behind the purest form of unarmed combat. At EssentiallySports, I try to bring the readers closer to the athletes and focus my coverage on exploring the human side of these martial artists. I’m a musician during my time free from reporting MMA. I operate as the lead vocalist of a rock band that aims to make their mark among the audiences with their original alternative-hard rock songs.
