#1 Jonathan Haggerty’s Fierce Boxing Sleeps Nong-O Hama

There’s only one word to describe Jonathan “The General” Haggerty’s knockout of Nong-O Hama in the night’s main event – insane. The Londoner floored the dominant ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Champion thrice in the opening round of their World Title tilt on his way to a massive TKO win at the 2:40 mark, ONE gold, and a hefty US$100,000 performance bonus.

Haggerty went at his foe from the opening bell, relying on his heavy combinations to slow down the dominant Thai. First, a counter straight right wobbled Nong-O. Then, just seconds after the restart, he hammered the kingpin with a pair of straight-cross combinations that dropped him yet again.

Sensing blood in the water, Haggerty stormed forward with another barrage of strikes that sealed his fate as the new bantamweight Muay Thai king inside the Thai capital city.

#2 Jhanlo Mark Sangiao’s Kneebar Ousts Matias Farinelli

ONE Fight Night 9 was capped off with an upset for the ages. But the stacked bill started similarly as Filipino upstart Jhanlo Mark “The Machine” Sangiao scored his sixth straight finish after an impressive first-round kneebar of Matias “El Rasta” Farinelli. Farinelli’s defeat was his own undoing, though. After being on the end of leg kicks and boxing combinations in the stand-up battle, the Argentinian switched levels.

From there, he went hunting for a possible rear-naked choke. Unfortunately, at the same time, Sangiao started attacking his rival’s leg. Just as “El Rasta” decided to open up to secure a more dominant position on Sangiao’s back, the latter saw the perfect opening to crank the match-winning kneebar at the 58-second mark of round one.

#3 Felipe Lobo’s Fury Of Strikes Floors Saemapetch Fairtex

Felipe “Demolition Man” Lobo sealed a career-defining win with his knockout victory over #1-ranked bantamweight Muay Thai star Saemapetch Fairtex last Friday.

The Brazilian did not have it easy against the Thai superstar, who attacked from bell to bell, searching for a highlight-reel moment. But in the final frame, “Demolition Man” turned the tide and snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.

The coveted scrap between Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson in 2002 was when I realized the passion for combat sports within my family. My interest in combat sports began watching scripted pro wrestling shows. It was my father who directed me towards combat sports and it wasn’t until the late 2010s that I discovered the world of MMA and the UFC. Like many of you, I too, tuned in for the infamous Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor bout live on October 6, 2018. Being an ardent fan of the UFC (and Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier), I was always looking to have conversations about the same with others. But to my disappointment, I hardly found any followers of the sports to interact with. So I took it upon myself to do my part in popularizing the thrill and the agony behind the purest form of unarmed combat. At EssentiallySports, I try to bring the readers closer to the athletes and focus my coverage on exploring the human side of these martial artists. I’m a musician during my time free from reporting MMA. I operate as the lead vocalist of a rock band that aims to make their mark among the audiences with their original alternative-hard rock songs.
