The third time was the charm. The intense rivalry between the Brazilian Bantamweights, Bibiano Fernandes and John Lineker, finally came to an end at the co-main of ONE: LIGHTS OUT.

With the big knockout, Linker won the ONE Bantamweight World Championship and ended the tremendous reign of the longstanding World Champion, Bibiano Fernandes.


The 41-year-old veteran and 31-year-old power puncher battled in a crazy bout.

Earlier, the Bantamweight World Champion looked mean coming into the ONE Circle. The intensity was something different. The Champion had never acted this way.

The usually happy Fernandes seemed affected by the trash talk before the fight. The supremacy to prove who is the better Brazilian fighter, made the champion come in with fire in his heart.

On the other hand, Lineker looked composed in the fight, ultimately getting the job done and securing the ONE Bantamweight World Championship at ONE: LIGHTS OUT.

Round by Round analysis of the co-main at ONE: LIGHTS OUT

Round 1 started with Lineker pressing Fernandes to the Circle wall and landing a leg kick. But Fernandes had a running single takedown after taking some initial time.

Both fighters appeared composed on the ground. Fernandes secured the legs and tried to look for position. When the referee warned Fernandes for inactivity, he landed some good shots before they broke. Lineker landed a good leg kick before a nice combo rocked Fernandes. Lineker was looking for the finish, tagging Fernandes with hooks, and was stalking the champion.

In the crazy exchange, Fernandes dropped Lineker. Fernandes pressed and pounced on the opportunity, though Lineker reversed the position. Lineker’s mouthpiece was out on the ground for a while before he put it back while controlling the World Champion.

On the ground, Lineker landed good ground and pound. Also, Fernandes did good work from the bottom. But strangely, no submission attack came from the World-class BJJ practitioner Fernandes.

Some good ground and pound from Lineker secured the first round for him, but the round was swinging like a pendulum. The left hooks were money for Lineker, but the champion stayed composed and got the knockdown as well. Fernandes was visibly damaged under the right side of his face, especially under the right eye because of the left hooks.

Lineker got the knockout in the second round

Round 2 saw both fighters start calmly. After a few leg-kicks from Lineker, the champion pressed the action, but Lineker was smart. Lineker landed some nice body shots and whenever the champion closed the distance, Lineker caught him with hooks. Though the champion adjusted and landed some good shots of his own, he was battling with the fire.

After a little brawl, the champion put Lineker to his back. Both fighters had a breather on the ground, Lineker explodes and got back to feet. Lineker pressed and had a hook vs hook battle with the champion. Both fighters threw a few jabs after the flurry.

Fernandes tried a takedown, but Linker stuffed it and found the big result he was looking for with a flush knockout. The champion took a lot of punishment in the fight.
