Organizers Desire to Have a Clay Court Tournament Between the US Open and French Open

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, many tournaments that were to be played now have been postponed. One of those tournaments was the second Grand Slam of the year – the French Open. No one was happy about this decision.

The director of the French Open Guy Forget has just talked about holding the tournament in a recent interview. Check out what he said.

Holding the 2020 French Open

Guy Forget recently appeared on Tennis Legends by Eurosport with Mats Wilander and Justine Henin. On the show, he started off by talking about the changes made to court Phillipe Chatrier. The major change is the new roof that will allow matches to continue even when it’s raining which is something every player would appreciate.

He then talked about how they are working to conduct the 2020 French Open and how they would like clay-court tournaments to be held before it. He said,

“We are working behind closed doors, of course. We are in regular contact with the government. The clay requires time to adapt and we would like there to be tournaments on clay before Roland Garros. For the moment, nothing has been approved.”

Every tennis player would love to play many clay-court tournaments. But Spanish superstar Rafael Nadal would want to play it more than anybody else. He loves playing on clay and it has been the surface he has set the most records on.

The one record he is most proud of is probably the record for the most titles at a single Grand Slam. He broke the record last year by winning his 12th title at the French Open and he will want to extend it by winning his 13th title in 2020.

However, that will only happen if the coronavirus is contained so that the French Open can be played. Hopefully, it is so that Rafa can show the world once again why they call him the ‘King of Clay’.
