The pandemic brought forth a sudden break for most players. Some used it to rest before commencing, while others used to play strategically. German professional Alexander Zverev used the time wisely to bolster his coaching bench and roped in David Ferrer.

The former World Number 3 retired from professional tennis last year at the Matua Madrid Open. The two spent a month together getting familiar with their news dynamic of a coach and player.

Alexander Zverev seems to be thrilled at the prospect of working under Ferrer. Admiring Ferrer’s tenure as a professional, Zverev finds him “the biggest competitor in the world”.

Sharing his views, Zverev stated, “He was known as the biggest fighter, the biggest competitor in the world… He is overachieving every single expectation I had of him as a coach. It is amazing.”

“Our personalities are extremely similar, which you wouldn’t think because of our game styles and how we are on court.”

Their differences in playing style brought forth hefty speculations as to how their relationship will turn out. Zverev himself clarifies the situation.

“We get along super well and during the European swing, he is going to be there. Unfortunately, he couldn’t come here but I am excited about what is ahead for us.”

Zverev will be missing Ferrer on his American tour. He will be continuing his Western and Southern Open as well as the US Open without the Spaniard. However, the European legs will see the duo in action.

Third-seeded Zverev is looking forward to the Western and Southern Open as a practice tournament before the US Open. With Novak Djokovic and Stefanos Tsitsipas in the tournament, Zverev’s journey won’t be easy.

However, considering the fighter he is, he won’t quit without drawing a bit of blood.
