The Aston Martin Red Bull team has said that Daniel Ricciardo will escape grid penalties in Hungary. This is a promising piece of news inspite of his retirement in Germany on Sunday.

The Australian was penalised in Hockenheim for exceeding the limit of certain replacement engine parts. When he retired with an engine problem in Germany, it raised questions of whether he would be further penalised in Hungary.

However, a Red Bull spokesman confirmed that the team did not expect to be taking penalties.

According to him, the part that failed will be “replaced with one of our quota”. This means that a used part that still has life in it will be in operation again. It would also avoid the need for a new part and an additional penalty.

In Germany, Ricciardo incurred a “tactical penalty” as Red Bull knew that they would be more competitive in Hungary.

A tactical penalty is only taken when a team is on the limit of the number of engine parts permitted per season. They usually take the penalty at a race where they expect to be less competitive. This will put them in a better position at a track where they could score more points.

Hungary is one of three circuit where Red Bull hope their car’s characteristics can help them. Their main weapon is a high level of aerodynamic downforce, which will offset the lack of performance. The Renault engine is significantly weaker compared to those of Mercedes and Ferrari.

One such circuit is the Monte Carlo circuit, where Ricciardo triumphed. Hungary is another, and the third is Singapore in September.

But, for now, the team will have their thoughts focused on the Hungarian GP. The Austrian joint have fallen behind off late and will be hoping to make up ground.
