“People Are Starting to Believe” – Roger Federer Hopeful of Switzerland’s Future in Sports

Amidst all the coronavirus gloom shrouding the globe, there are some good things to look to. Roger Federer gave some of his time to the ATP website to open up and discuss his journey from a boy to a tennis legend. Among other things, Roger talked about Swiss culture when it comes to sports and education.

Roger Federer was born and brought up in Basel, Switzerland. As a boy growing up, Roger was always attracted to the outdoors. A self-proclaimed average student, he grabbed every chance to go and play something, anything outside.

Roger played a lot of sports growing up. You may already know that he was a pretty good soccer player too. As outdoorsy as he was, carving out a career in sports was not exactly the plan. His parents, Robert and Lynette Federer were happy to let him play as long as he did not shun his education.

He mentioned that the prevalent culture and thought process in Switzerland was very education-oriented, however, the times they are a-changing now.

The original mindset in Switzerland is of course education always goes first. That was the same that my parents also taught me, but I do believe it’s starting to happen more and more that people actually believe that also sports can be a future and a career and a path.”

I certainly hope that’s true. Perhaps we will get some more gems from the country, tearing it up in tennis.

Roger also expressed hope that his many, many, many accomplishments in the sport of tennis will encourage and enable younger generations to pursue sports as a career.

“I hope that through what I do on a tennis court that I show them, maybe also I lead the way a little bit. That’s also going to be helpful for the next generation of superstar athletes from Switzerland.”

If Federer cannot inspire young guns to do that, what will?

We certainly expect to see many superstars come through from Switzerland in the next few years.
