Petra Kvitova Defeated Anett Kontaveit to Win Stuttgart Open

World No. 3  Petra Kvitova defeated Anett Kontaveit 6-3, 7-6 to win the Stuttgart Open. This is Kvitova’s second title of the year. She is the first player to win two titles in this season.

Petra Kvitova and Anett Kontaveit were playing for the 6th time in their career with the Czech leading the head-to-head 3-2 in their previous five meetings. But Kontaveit won their most recent encounter in Brisbane, earlier this year. The Estonian defeated the 29-year-old in straight sets 7-5, 7-6 in the round of 16 at the Brisbane International.

Their two have split their clay meetings in the last season. Petra Kvitova conquered their first match on clay at Madrid Masters in a three-setter 6-7, 6-3, 6-3. While Anett Kontaveit won the second 7-6, 7-6.

World no. 3 Petra Kvitova came into the match to become the first women to win two WTA titles in the 2019 season. Also, Kvitova has won the most number of matches on the WTA Circuit with 24 wins in this season.

On the other hand, Anett Kontaveit was aiming for the biggest title of her career. Also, the 23-year-old could jump the rankings to number 14 on the WTA leaderboards equalling her career high ranking.

In the first set, Petra Kvitova broke Kontaveit serve in the 5th game getting a lead of 4-2. 1st serve was the key in the first set as Kvitova hit 79 percent first serve in, winning 82 percent of the first serve against only 58 percent first serve in by Kontaveit with winning only 55 percent first serve won. Kvitova then held the serve till the end of the set, winning the set 6-3.

In the second set, both the players broke each other twice out of the 5 break points opportunity. The set went on till the tiebreaker. Petra Kvitova won the tiebreaker quite comfortably 7-2.

The Czech proved that she will be one of the best contenders to win the French Open with this victory. It will be interesting to see how she takes her momentum to the Roland Garros 2019.
