The 2020-21 golf season is already at the FedExCup Playoffs, only a few weeks away from the Ryder Cup. However, at this point, only two American golfers have secured their place in the Ryder Cup team. One of those players in Collin Morikawa, and the other is Dustin Johnson – who seems to have his own take on why golfers sometimes struggle to play well at the Ryder Cup.

This will be Johnson’s fifth Ryder Cup, only missing the event in 2014. DJ was even leading the Ryder Cup standings this year before Morikawa took over following his win at The Open Championship. While speaking with Golf Digest’s Daniel Rapaport, the 37-year mentioned how players perform at the Ryder Cup, and shared his take on the matter. 

What does Dustin Johnson have to say about how people perform at the Ryder Cup?

After his interview with Johnson, Rapaport posted about it on Twitter. “There will come a day when I grow tired of DJ’s press conference gold. That day is not today,” he wrote, highlighting the snippet from the interview that made him laugh. He had asked Johnson about how he feels people perform well during the Ryder Cup, and what qualities they need to do so.

“Why people play good and some don’t, it’s a golf tournament pretty much,” Johnson replied. “So we’re out there playing golf”. His response seems to have floored Rapaport, who seemed impressed with how to-the-point Johnson was.

The 2020 Masters winner admitted that golf can be frustrating and difficult, but revealed that the Ryder Cup is match play. It ends up being different as one is also playing with teammates for their country. “So it’s a little bit different of feelings out there”. He even spoke about the luck factor, adding that a little luck is needed.

“Sometimes if you’re playing every match or four matches, most likely you’re going to be a little bit off in one of them, and that’s the one where you need, obviously, a little help from the other side”.

How important is Johnson for Team USA at Ryder Cup 2021?

As per reports, Johnson is among the very few who can help Steve Stricker in multiple ways. In 2018, he spoke about playing the Ryder Cup, and how everyone only wants to play an important role in winning one. In the end, every player looks for that putt that will secure the Ryder Cup win, with tons of people cheering from the sidelines.
