Unlike any other PGA Tour tournament, the Dell Match Play has a different format. The 64 players would play in different groups according to their standings on the OWGR list. To get through the group stages, each golfer has to play three matches against the others in their group. Moreover, each golfer with more points from a group would advance to the playoffs.
The 16 players would then compete in eight matches, and the winners from each match would move forward. A quarter-final and semi-final are then played to decide the final two. After the semi-final, the top two would compete for first place. Meanwhile, a match between the bottom two players would decide the third and fourth place.
