‘Had Tears in My Eyes’ – Gary Player Emotionally Wishes Garrick Higgo on Historic PGA Tour Win

Garrick Higgo won the Palmetto Championship on Sunday at Congaree Golf Club in South Carolina. This tournament was his maiden start on the PGA Tour (non-major). But the 22-year-old has already made a mark for himself by winning the trophy. The South African shot 11 under for the tournament and won the Palmetto Championship by one stroke. 

The left-hander had already shown glimpses of his potential on the European Tour. The South African golfer has won $1.31 million as prize money and an exemption on the Tour till 2023. But he probably got his biggest prize during his post-round press conference when Gary Player had a telephonic conversation with him.

What did Gary Player say to Garrick Higgo?

The nine-time major championship winner was emotional after watching Garrick Higgo’s performance. He said, “I don’t think I have ever in my lifetime been more excited about anybody winning a golf tournament. I tell you, tears in my eyes, really, because you really deserve it”. Garrick Higgo seemed on cloud nine during this conversation with his legendary compatriot.

What stands out in Higgo’s game is his putting. His game on the greens has been phenomenal, and that’s primarily helped him get the trophy. The thing where he needs to improve is his iron and wedge game. Higoo’s approach and around the greens game has some loopholes, which in the future might cause few problems.

But Gary guided and motivated Garrick by saying, “You can have all the coaching and everything and all the talent. But if you don’t believe yourself, you’re the best. You can never do it. And I think you’ve got that into your brain now that you can believe that. You are destined for greatness, and you got to keep working hard and set your sights and set your goals”.

Garrick Higgo is already on a perfect road as in the last three months he has won twice on the European Tour and now in the PGA Tour, and with this win, he has jumped from 54th place to 39th in OWGR. And these few words from the legendary Gary himself will motivate and guide him to keep doing well.
