How Jon Rahm Can Get Into Tiger Woods Territory With a Win at the Fortinet Championship

Jon Rahm had a splendid year, looking back at the 2020-21 PGA Tour season. The Spaniard was the epitome of consistency, and he won his maiden major championship at U.S. Open 2021. His terrific season has increased his reputation as one of the world’s best, and the Spaniard is now the heavy favorite to win the 2021-22 PGA Tour season Opener.

The Fortinet Championship is the inaugural event of the new season, and this event was previously known as the Safeway Open until its name change this year. Rahm has only competed in this event once in his career – he finished 15th back in 2017 and carded a score of 12-under-par through 72 holes.

The Fortinet Championship boasts an impressive field for 2021. There are three of the four reigning major champions participating this week, as Collin Morikawa is the only major winner from last season who’s set to miss the tournament.

Now, there are plenty of reasons why a lot of golf fans refer to Tiger Woods as the GOAT. One of them is due to his incredible ability to win tournaments. The 45-year-old often went on a winning spree on the tour, which made him an obvious favorite in any tournament he entered.

Currently, Jon Rahm is enjoying a similar position on the tour. He’s deemed as an outright favorite in almost every tournament in plays and has reached new heights ahead of the Fortinet Championship.

This clearly implies that Jon Rahm is close to reaching Tiger Woods’ territory. Rahm is the favorite to win the Fortinet Championship and the odds have never been lower for a PGA Tour event since the 2013 Arnold Palmer Classic where Woods was +275 to win at Bay Hill.

Woods did win back in 2013. However, it remains to be seen if Jon Rahm can fulfill the humungous expectations placed on him at the moment. Rahm was the joint lowest scorer at the Tour Championship 2021, but the title was won by Patrick Cantlay owing to his two-stroke advantage at the start of the tournament.

Jon Rahm is the current World No. 1 and he achieved 15 Top 10 finishes from 22 starts in the previous season.
