OWGR: Jon Rahm Is the New World No. 1; Rory McIlroy Breaks Into Top 10

What a week it has been for golf! The U.S. Open 2021 truly lived up to its hype. Torrey Pines was a fantastic host which gave fans four days of exhilarating action. Jon Rahm is finally a major championship winner, but that’s not all that he won on Sunday. 

Jon Rahm has been consistent over the last few months and it has finally paid off. The 26-year-old became the first Spanish golfer to win the U.S. Open and it couldn’t have come at a better time. As Rahm rejoiced his win on Father’s Day, there was more good news waiting for him. 

Jon Rahm overtakes Dustin Johnson as the new World No. 1

Jon Rahm fans all around the world can rejoice! Their favorite player has once again regained the World No. 1 spot. It has been a thrilling ride for Rahm over the last few months, as he dethrones Dustin Johnson to become the new #1 player in the Official World Golf Ranking

Johnson had held the spot since winning the Tour Championship, but he is no longer the World No. 1. Jon Rahm gained 100 ranking points from his U.S. Open win. All of them contributed to helping him overtake DJ as the #1 golfer in the world.

Rahm first achieved the World No. 1 ranking after winning the 2020 Memorial Tournament. However, he could not hold onto the position for long as Johnson swooped in and grabbed it from him. 

Now, Rahm has once again reached the top after winning U.S. Open 2021. How long do you think he can sustain his ranking spot this time? Right now, Rahm is the World No. 1, followed by Dustin Johnson at #2, and then Justin Thomas at #3. 

Rory McIlroy breaks into the Top 10 with a T7 finish at U.S. Open

Rory McIlroy was experiencing a form slump a few months earlier. The four-time major winner broke out of it by winning the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club. It served as the perfect motivation ahead of the U.S. Open, and McIlroy delivered a solid performance as expected.

Rory McIlroy was 11th in the Official World Golf Ranking charts heading into the U.S. Open. But with a strong T7 finish at Torrey Pines, he has vaulted back into the tenth spot. McIlroy is once again a part of OWGR’s Top 10.
