The Rocket Mortgage Classic is one of the most anticipated tournaments on the PGA Tour calendar. The 2021 edition of the event is all set to take place from July 1-4 at the Detriot Golf Club. Before the main event, the traditional ‘AREA 313 Celebrity Scramble Challenge’ took place on Tuesday, which garnered a lot of attention from golf fans. 

What is the AREA 313 Celebrity Scramble Challenge?

Every year ahead of the Rocket Mortgage Classic, the ‘AREA 313 Celebrity Scramble Challenge’ is contested in order to raise money for charity. But why is it named Area 313? 

“AREA 313” is Detriot’s area code. That is the only significance behind the naming. So how does the contest work? Here’s how:

Six professional golfers participating in the Rocket Mortage Classic each captain a four-man team. The other members of the team are made up of amateurs and famous personalities. So the team is comprised of a professional golfer and an amateur. 

The AREA 313 Celebrity Challenge includes holes 14,15, and 16, which are par-5, par-3, and par-4 holes respectively. So, if a person makes an eagle on the 14th, an ace on the 15th, and a birdie on the 16th his scorecard will read ‘313’, which is Detroit’s area code.

Team Jason Day won by scoring 4-under through three holes

The AREA 313 Celebrity Scramble Challenge enticed everyone at the Detroit Golf Club on Tuesday. There were a lot of famous names who teamed up to conquer the three-hole challenge. 

But in the end, it was Jason Day and his team who reigned supreme in the celebrity scramble challenge. Timothy O’Neal was also part of Team Day, and the squad smiled in jubilation after raising the traditional “winner’s belts” as champions of the 2021 ‘AREA 313 Celebrity Scramble Challenge.’

Jason Day’s team shot an impressive 4-under in the three-hole contest, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 14th. “Don’t want to hurt my back, mate,” Day joked about his back injury during the tournament.
