WATCH: Troy Merritt Makes Sublime Hole-in-One at the Rocket Mortgage Classic

The 2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic is currently underway at the Detroit Golf Club, Michigan. And going into the last round, the leaderboard is absolutely on a cliffhanger. There are 11 players within three strokes of the lead and it promises to be an exciting Sunday. And almost everyone who is in contention is a less prominent player as the star players have struggled to make their mark on this tournament.

Currently, Troy Merritt and Joaquin Niemann lead the tournament with a total score of -14. But there are plenty of players who are right behind them to snatch the top spot. The 2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic host Detroit Golf Club is known to be a birdie paradise, and there is plenty of action happening on the course.

Troy Merritt scores an ace at the 2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic

The current joint leader Troy Merritt scored an amazing ace on 218 yards par-3 11th hole. He smashed a 5-iron from the tee box, and the ball bounced on the green before getting inside the hole. This marked the second ace of the tournament. Previously, Scott Brown had made an ace at the par3 15th in the second round. This was Merritt’s first-ever hole-in-one and it extended his lead by 3-shots.

But unfortunately, he scored a bogey and dropped a shot on the next hole, and finished the remaining holes with par. On the other hand, Joaquin Niemann scored a birdie on the 13th and 17th. Niemann scored four birdies in the round and tied for the lead at -14.

The 2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic has seen something unusual as the star players have struggled to get going. Apart from Rickie Fowler, no prominent name seems to be in contention to lift the trophy. Guys like Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau struggled a lot in this tournament.

Going in the final round, Hanik Lebioda and Cam Davis are just a stroke behind the leaders with a score of -13, and Brandon Hagy is at 5th place with -12. So there are plenty of players in contention to lift the trophy. It’s going to be an exciting last round.
