Phasmophobia Jumps a Spot on Steam Charts to Reach an All-Time High

2020 has arguably been one of the best years for gaming. It has also been a gift for small individual developers that have produced games like Among Us and Fall Guys, which have broken the glass ceiling to reach new heights of popularity. Among these, there is also a horror game Phasmophobia. Kinetic Games developed Phasmophobia for Microsoft Windows as a VR game.

The game rose to popularity when streamers on Twitch and YouTubers, including big names like PewDiePie, played the game on their broadcasts. It joined the list of unexpected games to top the charts. Industry analyst Daniel Ahmed shared the sales charts from Steam that displayed the top-selling games in terms of dollars worth of sales.

The chart shows an interesting trend. Out of the top 10, only a minority are mainstream games. A majority of the games on the chart aren’t the usual titles but instead games that rose to the top of the chart as viral trends.

Phasmophobia jumps a spot to top the charts

 

Comparing this week’s chart to the previous one, Phasmophobia has moved up one place to reach #1 for the first time. Moreover, Cyberpunk 2077 pre-orders have enabled the game to jumps from #6 to #4, as the game comes close to release. Among Us holds its lead over others at the third spot.

GTA keeps featuring on the list on and off, considering it still is one of the few good mainstream games left on Steam. A lot of developers have moved their products from the platform. Those that remain aren’t too popular these days.

The charts are based on sales in US dollars. Therefore, it doesn’t really depict the number of games sold. Hence, expensive items such as the Valve Index VR kit feature higher up on the list as compared to others that might have a higher number of sales but are cheaper. It will be interesting to see how these games perform when fresh titles release with the launch of next-gen gaming consoles.
