Last year, Sony released its new-gen console with the promise of revolutionizing the gaming experience. The PlayStation 5 delivered the performance that it promised and managed to live up to the expectations of the community, thanks to its powerful hardware. A few months have passed since the release of the PlayStation 5, and Sony has announced the first major update for this console.
The upcoming major console update is about to go live in the month of April. There are a lot of changes that this update is about to make, both major and minor. This update will be majorly revamping the user experience on the PlayStation 5.
One of the major changes that the April update of PS5 will include is the external storage support. Hideaki Nishino, the Senior Vice President of Platform Planning & Management, spoke about this at length in the latest PlayStation blog post.

Regarding the external storage support, the blog post explains:
“With this feature, you can now transfer your PS5 games to USB extended storage from your console’s internal storage. It’s a great way to extend the storage capabilities of your PS5 console, and you can seamlessly copy your PS5 games back to the console’s internal storage when you’re ready to play. It is faster to reinstall PS5 games from USB extended storage than to re-download or copy them from a disc.”

However, you will not be able to play the games from external storage. Furthermore, the console will not allow you to download or install games directly into external storage. This is because PS5 games are designed to take advantage of the console’s high-speed SSD, as the blog post explains. Although it came with a trade-off, the external storage support system will be pretty useful.

“PS4 and PS5 players can now Share Play together while chatting in parties. This means PS5 console users can let their friends on PS4 consoles view their game screen, or even try out the PS5 games through Share Play, and vice versa.”
