Polona Hercog Lifts The WTA Samsung Open Title

The Slovenian tennis player, Polona Hercog has knocked down the new Polish number one player, Iga Swiatek in the finals of the WTA Samsung Open in Lugano. Hercog pulled off her third WTA crown on the Swiss clay tournament by ousting the 17-year-old, Swiatek in three sets. The final match was going to and fro between Hercog and Swiatek and elated the audience with a championship match full of suspense.   

In the first, the Slovenian got hold of an early break of serve and held a 2-1 lead and later Swiatek did earn triple break points. However, towards the end of the opening set the Polish players hits a wide forehand and gave away the first set to the World Number 89, Polona Hercog 6-3.

In the second set, Hercog placed a spectacular lasso forehand winner on her opponent’s court and Swiatek was far away from attempting it. Despite that, Swiatek earned an early break to take a 2-1 lead. However, Polona Hercog retaliated by breaking her to love in the very next game. Swiatek placed an unplayable dropshot on Hercog’s arena to earn three breaks at 3-3.

Lifting up her game, Swiatek stormed to take a 5-3 lead in the second set and in a blink of an eye, she broke the six-feet-one-inch tall Slovenian to seize the set 6-3 and pushed the Swiss clay final into the deciding set.

In the meantime, Polona Hercog had some issues with her right knee and later the 17-year-old won her sixth consecutive game in the final and held a 2-0 lead with some smartly placed dropshots. Nevertheless, Polona Hercog broke back with a forehand volley and kept her hopes for her third WTA title alive in the rollercoaster championship match.

Polona Hercog proceeded ahead with making no mistakes in the match and held a 5-3 lead and later broke Swiatek’s serve as she widens a forehand and eventually lifted up the WTA Samsung Open title with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory in the final.
