After the international break in the Premier League 2019/20, Arsenal seemed to be cruising at the end of the first half against Watford on Sunday, when the scoreline at Vicarage Road read 2-0 in favour of the North London side.

It was early in the second half that Watford pulled one goal back. This is when Arsenal mid-fielder Matteo Guendouzi made a gesture to the celebrating Watford fans which seemed to suggest the scoreline which was still in Arsenal’s favour.

But come the end of the match, Arsenal dropped points. After the match, Watford tweeted a picture of Guendouzi’s gesture with a caption of emoticons showing the scoreline of the match.

Watford started the second half with great purpose and they scored their first in the 53rd minute through Tom Cleverey, and Roberto Pereyra, in the 81st minute scored the equaliser.

“It was two different halves,” Arsenal manager Unai Emery told after the match. The first half we were winning 2-0 and controlling the match like we wanted. The second half, they pushed it. With their supporters, they pushed for our mistakes. We did more than we wanted to do and the second half, really, is for me, for us to give a lot of information about how we can improve, do our way better. Really, our way needs to work for a lot of things. But it’s not a good result after being 2-0. The second half they pushed, physically, very strong and they give us that bad moment and they draw.”

What was more worrying for Arsenal is that Watford managed 31 attempts on their goal, to their 7.

“We were saying that two-nil was not enough,” Emery said. “We were speaking about that. We needed in the second half to do the same work as in the first but knowing that they would push more. They did that. We cannot in some moments break the lines to take confidence in our game.”

The result meant that Arsenal stay at two wins after five matches, and Watford are yet to win the league this year.
