It brought great joy to British hearts when Andy Murray decided that he would compete at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. The veteran has already won two gold medals at the Games in the past two editions, winning in 2012 and 2016 respectively.

However, Andy Murray decided to pull out of the singles category this edition and instead focus on doubles. Knowing of his recent struggles, he felt a sense of discomfort and sat down with his team before revealing his decision.

The 34-year-old player spoke on this issue and stated, “It felt fine. It hasn’t really affected me at all in the two matches that I’ve played. It was very disappointing because I prepared well, was feeling good again, and then just had something showing up on the scans that we weren’t too happy with. When we spoke about playing, I told Joe if I had any physical issues that I’d prioritize the doubles over singles, that’s why I made the decision to stick just with the doubles.”

The Scot revealed had he taken the decision to play the singles and aggravated his injury, then it would’ve been a huge task to compete in the doubles. So far, he feels fine but he did maintain that he will need to take a break once his tournament is concluded.

The two-time Wimbledon champion further added, “I would have been annoyed with myself if I’d taken the decision to play with the issue that I had, made it worse, lost my singles, and then not been able to perform well in the doubles. I think physically I’ll be OK for the rest of the tournament but I’ll need to take a break afterward.”
