The 54th meeting between the two best tennis players of the world, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic took place on the center court of the Foro Italico. Before entering the finals, Rafa had just dropped 13 games at the Italian Open 2019, whereas the Serb played arduous matches on the Roman clay.
The Spaniard, Rafael Nadal knocked down Novak Djokovic 6-0, 4-6, 6-1, to collect his 34th Masters 1000 title on the men’s tour and records the highest number of Masters titles ever won by tennis professional. Also, the Italian Open 2019 title accounts to be his first title of tennis season 2019 and ninth crown in Rome.
In their last meeting in Melbourne, Novak Djokovic did not give Rafael Nadal an opportunity to break his service. And today in Rome the Spaniard earned his first break point against the World Number one in the opening game with an ingenious drop shot on Djokovic’s court. Rafael Nadal converted the break of serve by slamming a magnificent backhand winner and with Djokovic netting a ball on the net.
The Spaniard, being undaunted throughout held his serve to love and then again received a break point with his lethal forehand and Novak flawing on the net. For the third break of serve, Rafael Nadal secured five opportunities with Djokovic double faulting in-between, Rafa converted the fifth and bolted to take a 5-0 lead in the Rome Masters 2019 finals.
In the next game, the Spaniard was on a rampage as the top-seed, Novak Djokovic was bageled by Rafael Nadal for the very first time in his career and it was his ninth bagel set on the ATP Tour. After having a title-less season and a despairing clay tour, Rafael Nadal seemed determined to seize the Roman crown for the ninth time.
In the second set, Djokovic had zero room for error, the Serb came up with three aces and held his serve to love. Rafael Nadal emulated the same in his service game. The best returners in the history of tennis, Novak Djokovic earned his first break point of the match but Rafa saved it by slamming an explosive forehand at 2-2.
Novak fumbled an overhead smash was gave Rafa three break points, but with the Spaniard being incessant with his unforced errors squandered all of them and Djokovic maintained his 4-3 lead in the second set.
Rafael Nadal came across his 13th break points and was resilient with his tennis in the Italian clay Masters final, with Djokovic battling to stay in the title match held his serve with a 5-4 lead.
In the next service game of Rafa, Djokovic took a 30-0 lead and the Spaniard extended the game to deuce. The Serb secured his first break of serve and simultaneously he sealed the set by converting it and dragged out the set to a decider in the championship match.
In the third set, the opening game turned out to be a lengthy one and Rafael Nadal got back his service game which he dropped a game before in the second set. And then consolidated with a 2-0 lead over Novak in the deciding set of the championship.
With breaking Novak Djokovic thrice in the final set, Rafael Nadal pulled off his victory in the Italian capital and now he will now fly to Paris with positive aspirations and a title in his bag.
