Rafael Nadal Playing On Grass
In a recent interview with the ATPTour.com, Francisco Roig talked a great deal about Rafa playing on grass. He recalled the first time he saw him play on grass back in 2002-3. He felt that the Spaniard was a very capable player as he said,
“From the first moment, I could see that he was very capable of adapting to grass. A few years had to go by before he would earn the confidence and the knack for playing on it. But Rafa has a quality, among many, that I think is incredible and makes him different from the rest. He knows how to overcome adversity like no other.”
From 2006 to 2011, Rafa reached 5 Finals at the Wimbledon winning 2. He is clearly an amazing grass-court player but sadly, after 2011 he did not succeed at the Wimbledon until 2017. Roing talked about this comeback as he said,
“He has played stunning tennis in the past three editions. In 2017, he lost in the fourth round to Gilles Muller in a match that could have gone either way. He was playing well enough to do something big that year at Wimbledon. He came close in the past two years.”

In 2018 and 2019 we have seen Rafael Nadal play some incredible grass-court tennis reaching the semi-finals of Wimbledon in both years. Even though he has not won the event as many times as others, Roig feels he is still among the best. He said,
“I would rate him very highly among Wimbledon players. It goes without saying that you’d have to place him among the best players in history on any surface.”
