Records in danger at the 2017 Wimbledon Championships

The 2017 Wimbledon Championships are just a few more days away. The most awaited tennis tournament of the year and also the oldest. Wimbledon completes 140 years since it was first played in 1877. The 3rd Major of the year is the 131st Edition of the Championships.

With lot at stake for the players and the prestige of the tournament we take a look at the records which might be broken at this years Championships.

Most Gentlemen’s Singles Titles

Although Roger Federer has the record for most all time Gentlemen’s Singles titles at Wimbledon, he is tied with William Renshaw and Pete Sampras at 7. Winning at this years Championships would make him clear of the two and make him the first man ever to win 8 Wimbledon Singles titles.

The 7 time winner won his first Major in over 4 years at this years Australian Open and it would be no surprise if he wins his 8th at Wimbledon.

Gentlemen’s Singles Roland Garros/Wimbledon Double

Only 9 Men in tennis history have manages to win Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same calendar year. Out of the 9 only Rod Laver, Björn Borg and Rafael Nadal have done it multiple times. If Nadal triumphs at this years Championships he will match the record with Björn Borg to win Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same calendar year on 3 different occasions. Borg achieved this feat for the 3rd time in 1980.

Oldest Gentlemen’s Singles Winner at Wimbledon in the Open Era

Roger Federer surprised everyone by winning his 18th Major at 35 years of age. But the Swiss remains in contention to win his 8th Wimbledon title. By winning Wimbledon he could well become the oldest Winner at Wimbledon in Open Era surpassing Arthur Ashe who won Wimbledon at 31y 11m 25d old in 1975. Federer could win his 8th Wimbledon on 16th July, 2017 at 35y 11m 08d old.

Most Gentlemen’s Singles Matches Played

Roger Federer could become the joint record holder with Jimmy Connors to become the man to play most Singles matches at Wimbledon. Federer has currently played 95 matches and a final spot at this years Championships(without a Walkover) would match him with Connors at 102 matches played.

Most Gentlemen’s Singles Grand Slam Appearances

Roger Federer could equal the record for most appearances at Grand Slams during this year’s Championships. Federer has appeared at 69 Grand Slam events till date and one more appearance would equal him with Fabrice Santoro at 70.
