Rocket League: Massive Prize Money Announced for Inaugural Event

Rocket League has always been a popular game title. Recently, though, the numbers surged meteorically, crossing the 500,000 player mark across all platforms. With this rise in users, Rocket League now has its highest number of players ever. This is not surprising given the ongoing pandemic, forcing us to maintain social distancing.

Despite the surge in users, there is a downside to the whole episode. The season 9 of the Rocket League World Championship was called off in order to maintain public safety and health. As disappointing as that is, it was absolutely necessary.

Fans of the title will rejoice when they hear what Psyonix plans to do instead of the World Championships. They have announced a new online competition which is to start in April.

Named the Rocket League Spring Series, the event will feature teams from the four major regions, namely- North America, South America, Oceania, and Europe.

With a total prize pool of $300,000, you can expect the big-name teams to all participate, from the sanctity of their homes, of course.

Let’s look into some of the specifics of this inaugural competition.

Schedule and prize money

The scheduling of the Open Qualifiers and Play-offs had to be done in a calculated manner, due to the fact that all matches will take place online.

South America: April 14-15 (Open Qualifiers) and April 18-19 (Main Event);

Prize Money: $50,000

North America: April 21-22(Open Qualifiers) and April 25-26 (Play-off);

Prize Money: $125,000

Oceania: April 28-29 (Open Qualifiers) and May 2-3 (Play-off);

Prize Money: $50,000

Europe: May 5-6 (Open Qualifiers) and May 9-10(Play-off);

Prize Money: $125,000

As you can see, each region has to conclude its qualifiers as well as play-offs within a week’s time, which is tight but easily possible.

There will be 8 teams per regional tournament. Furthermore, the top 4 teams of season 9’s Regional Championships will qualify automatically and also get preferential seeding. The qualifiers will determine the rest of the spots on the series.

All match-ups will be best of 5, with the exception of the Grand Final, Winners’ Bracket and Losers’ Bracket, which will be best of 7.
