Six-time champion Roger Federer has revealed his future plans to play the Australian Open 2021. The Swiss maestro expressed his desire to return at the Melbourne Park next year after his fourth-round victory at the Rod Laver Arena on Sunday.

Federer recovered from a slow start to reach his 15th Australian Open quarterfinals with a four setter 4-6, 6-1,6-2, 6-2 victory over Marton Fucsovics. Federer wished Australia Day to the crowd and suggested to celebrate the day while dropping a hint about his plans for the future.

During his post-match on-court interview with John McEnroe, the 20-time Grand Slam champion told the crowd he wants to return to Melbourne in 2021. The 38-year-old is nearing to hang up his racquet in the foreseeable future – but that will not be this year.

“Enjoy your night, enjoy your day and I hope I’ll see you again of course next year on Australia day. That’ll be nice,” said Federer.

“It’s a pleasure to play tonight”: Federer

“Happy Australia Day everybody here in Australia. I hope you guys are having a nice evening. It’s not over yet, you’ve got another half an hour to grab a drink. It’s a pleasure to play tonight,” Federer said.

The Swiss maestro further recalled that he remembers he played on a few Australia Days. He remembers once they even had to stop, once they played through the fireworks. However, now they have moved it far away from the Australian Open and he thinks they are thankful.

“Enjoy your night, enjoy your day and I hope I’ll see you again of course next year on Australia day. That’ll be nice,” Federer concluded.
