An Italian journalist, Fabrizio Biasin was present at the Oscars of Sports or the Laureas Awards in 2018 in Monte Carlo. The award ceremony witnesses the phenomenal athletes of the world and the ambience over there seems like a heavenly kingdom of sports. To no one’s surprise, the Swiss legend tennis player, Roger Federer was present at the elite sports gathering. That year, Federer clinched the Sportsman of the Year and the Comeback of the Year award. He was occupied by spending time with his fans and clicking selfies with them. On the contrary, other champions uttered, “speed up with questions that I have to go,” or “stop with photos, I have to go.”

“At some point, I saw Federer in a private room of the Congress’ centre: he was taking selfies with the Princess’ friends and he was laughing with everyone,” the journalist, Biasin penned. “Then he was on the red carpet: he was taking selfies with kids and was laughing with everyone. There were three phenomenal athletes, American ones, that did the sport’s history. They were speaking to each other in a luxury bar, protected by a couple of (bodyguards). At some point, I saw Federer at a gala dinner: people were asking him for a selfie. He stopped eating, got up and was smiling at everyone.”

The eight-time Laureas award recipient, Roger Federer is winning people’s hearts by not just with the magic that he creates with his Wilson wand on the tennis court but also with his simple and ineffable etiquettes and the amount of respect that he shows towards his fans.

“There were many other famous athletes who came to earn the “appearance fee” and, once they ended the usual speech (“I thank this guy and this guy for the great opportunity, go sports and blah blah blah”) they left very quickly. At some stage, I saw Federer. The dinner was finished. The big amount of guests got closer to his table room. He shook hands, took selfies, hugged for 40 minutes. Now, I don’t say that other champions are bad because it’s not true. I only say that I understand because this Swiss is “beyond.” Beyond the performances, being able to play tennis, successes, being born with it or becoming like this. He is “beyond” because, despite everything, he hasn’t lost touch with reality yet,” the journalist wrote.
