Roger Federer, who has arrived in Australia to take part in the final edition of the Hopman Cup, spoke about the prime candidates who were the favorites to win the Australian Open. In the first edition of the ‘AO Show’ Roger Federer and Leyton Hewitt spoke a little on who they thought could dominate at the Australian Open.
“You have to go with (Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Alexander Zverev)”, said Roger Federer, when he as asked about his favorites for the Australian Open. “They are definitely the favorites”, said Roger Federer.
Federer also spoke about how, the youngsters have been proving their worth on the tour, and closing in on the big tournaments. However, Federer believes that he the veterans still ahve enough gas left in their tanks to deny the young guns the big titles for another year. “The Next Gen is definitely pushing through”, said Roger Federer. “Is it a time where they are going to win a Slam? That would be nice, but I hope I’m in the mix and will not allow that to happen at this year’s Australian Open”, said Federer with a smile.
“There are guys who can do breakthrough performances like (Stefanos) Tsitsipas or (Denis) Shapovalov or Nick (Kyrgios) but if you’re talking about who is going to win, it’s probably going to be one of the top 10 guys”, said the Swiss maestro.
Lleyton Hewitt spoke about how the Australian hopes were rested on the shoulders of the youngster Alex De Minaur, who has impressed many with his game-style.“We have a new No.1 on the men’s side in Alex de Minaur who gets the opportunity to go out there and most likely be seeded for the first time at a major”, said Hewitt.
“To think that he was outside 200 a year ago and now he’s going to be pushing top 30 in the world is quite extraordinary”, he added.
