Roger Federer has always been the guy who has hogged all the limelight of a tournament, and has played almost all of his matches on the show courts since over a decade. However, Federer said that even he has been through the tough times, where he has played matches on the lesser known courts, or on the show courts but the crowd was betting against him.

When you are 20 years old and you have the chance to play in the biggest stadiums, you know that people are not there because they consider you as your favorite”, said Roger Federer. “They come to see you because they have tickets for the center court, because they cheer for your opponent, they love tennis or they may want to see a player who could improve in the future”, said the Swiss maestro.

“Considering instead the current situation and all that I achieved, I think that people come to me and it’s great to hear all their support during a match”, said Roger Federer. “So it’s totally different. It really seems you have two different careers. It brings you to enjoy more if I think also about all the work I had to do to get here. You do not necessarily look for popularity, but you have to enjoy on the Tour and show yourself that you deserve the biggest stadiums on which you can play”, he added.

“I am able to do it. Maybe one day, I will have to play in the smaller courts but it’s okay for me because I had some great times”, said Roger Federer. “I think that all the sacrifices I did get paid off and I can allow myself to enjoy more.” Federer also spoke about how now he feels free from pressures and how it has been different  for him since the early days.

“I do not feel the pressure to show every day what I am able to do. I am not a young guy who cried at the end of the match anymore. I was very inconsistent and I was getting emotional for anything”, said the Swiss maestro.

“Now I am much more stable. I know where I come from, what I did, what I can still do and how I can achieve it. So I feel in a calm position. Okay, sometimes you enjoy less because it happens you lose matches you should have not lost but I do not feel it so much because I always give my best. When I was younger, I could not behave this way because mentally I was too weak.”
