Recently, Marion Bartoli stirred up some controversy when she suggested that the money from doubles tournaments should be given to lower-ranked singles’ players. Her reason for this was that lower-ranked singles players make much less than the top-ranked players. And to explain this reason further she has used Roger Federer as an example. Check it out.

Marion Bartoli On Roger Federer

Marion Bartoli realized that she stirred up some controversy through her statements so she decided to explain herself further. On RMC Sport, She used Roger Federer to highlight the differences between a lower-ranked player and a top player. She said,

“My overall reflection is to see that Roger Federer is the highest-paid sportsman at 100 million dollars and the 150th world cannot make a living from his sport. I’m not saying that we have to take money from Federer. But that if we could better distribute the prize money and save somewhere for players who have so many costs elsewhere, I don’t see the harm in there. I don’t just think about taxing doubles players, my thinking is more global.”

Prize money distribution has been one of the biggest debates in tennis and it doesn’t look like it will end soon. But that is not a debate that lower-ranked players will be focused on right now. This is because they might not get any prize money in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic suspending the ATP Tour.

They obviously need the Tour to restart in 2020 but the spread of the virus also needs to be controlled. This is why the governing bodies came up with an idea. They suggested playing all the tournaments left in 2020 without fans in the arena.

Many people including Roger Federer opposed this idea and said that tennis should start when things are normal again. Obviously, no lower-ranked player is going to want that.  A decision regarding this will be taken by the governing bodies soon based on the situation.
