Roger Federer unveiled his outfit for the US Open 2019, last week. The Swiss Maestro went for an all-black outfit styled by Uniqlo as he revealed that he “wanted a full-body black style for the design of this year’s US Open.” It will be the second time that the 38-year-old wears this kit in New York.

In an interview with the Vogue magazine, Roger Federer explained the reason behind the all-black design of his outfit.

He said, “New York City is always a favorite stop on the tour. I wanted to bring something elevated to the U.S. Open, and feel the black is a strong finale look for the Grand Slam. It also resonates with memories I have of playing here in the evening under the lights.”

Roger Federer also revealed that he feels more pressure to have a certain on-court look as he feels that the US Open draws a pretty fashionable crowd. “The pressure is always on. I do feel an elevated sense of style here,” the 5-time US Open champion said.

Praising the Uniqlo’s R&D team, Roger Federer said, “I’m lucky to work so closely with Christophe Lemaire, the artistic director of Uniqlo’s Paris R&D Center, and the consideration that goes behind the aesthetic or traditions of each tournament location paired with my style preferences.”

Roger Federer also explained that comfort is most important to him as the Swiss revealed that he tests his outfits to ensure that it’s comfortable to him. “Comfort is always number one,” he said. “The Uniqlo design team is committed to ensuring every last detail is perfect, and I spend time testing out different cuts and fabric technologies to ensure what I’m wearing moves with me.”

Federer also divulged the signatures of his off-court style that he likes to incorporate into his playing outfits. The 20-time Grand Slam champion suggested that he always like a good layering piece—whether off the court with a crew neck sweater or on the court with a zip-up.

Earlier, Rafael Nadal had also unveiled an all-black outfit for the US Open 2019, which is scheduled to start from August 26. Roger Federer has not won the US Open title since more than a decade with his last title coming in 2008. At the US Open 2019, the 38-year-old will try his luck with the all-black jersey like in 2007 when he went on to win the title.
