Roger Federer Says Missing French Open Was Never in His Plan

The Swiss, Roger Federer prevailed over the World Number 26, Filip Krajinovic 7-5 6-3 in the third round of the Miami Open 2019. In the opening set, the fourth seed converted two of eight break points received and won 74% of first-serve points. Next, Roger Federer will take on the Russian Daniil Medvedev in the pre-quarters of the Florida Masters.

Before he takes off for his meeting with Medvedev, the World Number five, Roger Federer revealed his excitement to play on the clay surface month to Tennis Channel, where he will be making a return after three years. He is planning to return for the Paris major and before that, he has confirmed his appearance in one of the warm-up events on the dirt.

Also, he disclosed the reason behind him playing on clay. Roger Federer discussed with his team whether to play on clay or not. “What do you think about the clay, should I do it or not?” he asked his team. “Then they were like well if you are happy to play tennis, that’s a good thing”. Roger Federer credits his team for his attempt to play tennis during the clay season this year.

“I must say, missing out on two full clay seasons and three French Opens now, it is not something I thought I was ever going to do later on in my career,” Roger Federer said. “Three years ago I got injured. My knee was not doing well. Two years ago I was on clay for a couple of days and then I rethought about my decision.”

“Last year, I really wanted to take a break,” he continued. “It was nice to have three months off with the family and being able to train and for longevity reasons, I thought it’s a great thing to do. And this year, I didn’t want to have three months off and I was excited to play the clay season again. It would actually help me, maybe for Wimbledon or the rest of the season. Lets see what will happen, if something good happens great, if it doesn’t I’ll still have a great time.”
