Romeo Fernandes becomes the first Indian player to play in the Brazilian league

The Goan made his professional debut for the Brazilian club Atletico PR on Saturday.

The 22-year old made his much awaited debut in Brazil at home for Atletico Paranaense against Nacional PR in the last round of Campeonato Paranense on Saturday.

The Goan footballer created history as he became the first Indian to feature in Brazilian footballer. Since he joined the Brazilian club from Dempo Sports Club on loan, he has been training with the reserves and was training alongside the senior players over the last few days.

Romeo was likely to make an appearance in the second half of the encounter with Nacional and was subbed in at the 69 minute for Rafinha.

Atletico were already 4-0 up when the Indian youngster took in to the pitch and eventually defeated them by five goals to nil.

After impressing in the Indian Super League where he played for FC Goa, his debut in the Brazilian League only improves to the progress of Indian players playing abroad. Last month, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu made his professional debut for the Norweign club Staebek FC in Norway and became the first Indian to play a competitive match for a European club.
