Sony has scheduled an update for the PlayStation Store. They will roll out the update from October 19 for web, and October 28 for mobile. The update comes a few weeks before the official launch of next-gen consoles from Sony. Since they have to prepare the web store for fresh content for the PS5, they need to remove some items from the shelves.

Content for the older generation consoles including the PS3, PSP, and the PS Vita is getting the axe. Therefore, after the update, users can no longer buy games, apps, themes, avatars, and other content for the respective consoles. Instead, they will have to resort to using their devices to buy such content. However, they will still have access to all their previously purchased content.

The trend is concerning for consumers owning older generation of PlayStation consoles. Removal from the digital webstore can only mean that a few months down the line, Sony will also shut down the store accessible through the consoles. They definitely need to render their older consoles obsolete to lure consumers into buying new ones.

Consumers have also complained about how the stores in the consoles are practically inaccessible. Some users have already said they would rather buy the next-gen consoles than go through the pain of purchasing content through the consoles.
